De film volgt de Chinees-Amerikaanse Suzie die gebruik maakt van de culturele tradities van haar familie om een ouderwetse kerst bak wedstrijd op te fleuren. Suzie, een opkomende jonge architect, keert voor Kerstmis terug naar haar kleine geboorteplaats in Maine, waar haar Chinees-Amerikaanse familie de plaatselijke Lobster Bar runt. Na het verlies van haar geliefde grootmoeder, die een gerenommeerde bakker was in hun gemeenschap, voelt Suzie zich schuldig door in de voetsporen van haar grootmoeder te treden door mee te doen aan de plaatselijke peperkoek huiswedstrijd. Samen met een oude middelbare schoolvriend Billy, die opgroeide als een gevangene, moet Suzie de juiste recepten en mix van suiker en kruiden vinden om de wedstrijd te winnen en misschien wel wat liefde te vinden.
