Anson Page, een advocaat met zuidelijke roots, verlaat New York, zijn vrouw en zijn kinderen en vertrekt naar Georgië. Zijn opdracht is om de zaak van Garvin Wales te onderzoeken, een beroemde schrijver, nu bijna blind en verbitterd, wiens royalty's hem blijkbaar nooit hebben bereikt.
