Il film racconta il dramma incentrato sulla storia di Tom Avery, oftalmologo californiano che - alla notizia della morte del figlio durante una tempesta sui Pirenei - si reca in Francia per farlo cremare, poi ripone l'urna con le ceneri nello zaino del ragazzo e si mette in viaggio lungo il Cammino di Santiago, portando a termine il pellegrinaggio intrapreso dal figlio.
