Due milioni di anni fa, subito dopo il pasto, un giovane uomo-scimmia di nome Edouard cade dal suo albero e si rompe una delle zampe anteriori. Per sopravvivere, è costretto ad ergersi in posizione verticale e a inventare un nuovo modo di camminare usando solo le due zampe posteriori. Essendo però solo, è circondato dai pericoli della savana e per convincere i suoi simili ad unirsi a lui deve raddoppiare il suo ingegno e inventare il fuoco, la caccia, le moderne abitazioni, l'amore e la speranza.
