All'incrocio tra la Seventh Avenue e la Third Street c'è il Brooklyn Cigar Co., un negozietto per fumatori gestito da Auggie, dietro i cui modi burberi e trasandati si cela un acuto filosofo. Parecchi anni prima, proprio davanti al negozio di Auggie, gli è stata uccisa sotto gli occhi la moglie incinta, ed è ancora devastato dal dolore. Un giorno, Paul quasi è investito da un autobus. Lo salva al volo Rashid Cole, un ragazzino che sta scappando non si sa da cosa, ma che Paul ospita nella propria casa.
