A szellemileg visszamaradott Jobe Smith-t (Jeff Fahey) "fűnyíróembernek" hívják a városban. A húszéves fiatalember értelmi és érzelmi fejlődése egy ötéves gyermek szintjén rekedt meg. Angelo doktor (Pierce Brosnan), aki csimpánzokon végez kísérleteket az intelligenciaszint növelésére, megsajnálja Jobe-ot, majd veszélyes kísérletsorozatának alanyává teszi. Az eredmény megdöbbentő: Jobe intelligenciája ugrásszerűen fejlődik. Értelmi képességeinek növekedésével azonban felerősödnek agresszív ösztönei is.
