Maja Wegner, eine Frau Ende dreißig mit halbwüchsiger Tochter, will die eingefahrenen Gleise verlassen und ein neues Leben beginnen. Sie gibt ihre Stellung als Dispatcherin beim Kraftverkehr auf, verkauft ihr Landhäuschen, zieht in die Großstadt und sucht sich Arbeit bei der Reichsbahn - als Zugschaffnerin. Um einen Mann zu finden, gibt sie eine Annonce auf. Zusammen mit ihrer Freundin Carola befindet sie den Bewerber für ungeeignet. In dem großen Mietshaus schließt sie schnell Freundschaften. Mit dem Schlagerkomponisten, der über ihr wohnt, hat sie eine engere Beziehung, wird jedoch von ihm enttäuscht. Am Ende erweist sich ihr Kollege Gerd, der sie schon länger heimlich verehrt, als möglicher Lebenspartner.
