1852 kommt es bei Kautokeino, im Norden des heutigen Norwegens, zu einem Aufstand der Sami. Angeführt von Aslak Hætta und seiner Frau Elen wehren sie sich gegen den Händler und Gastwirt Ruth, der mit Hilfe von Schnaps und Gewalt große Teile der samischen Rentierzucht an sich gebracht hat. Weil er dabei von lokalen Kirchenvertretern unterstützt wird, richtet sich die Rebellion auch gegen die staatliche Obrigkeit, die mit aller Härte zurückschlägt.
